LTS Lohmann Therapie-Systeme AG
LTS Lohmann Therapie-Systeme AG is a world class developer and manufacturer of transdermal (TTS) and oral thin film (OTF) drug delivery systems and adhesive laminates.

The company in detail

Profile

LTS is a leader in the transdermal area with a successful and proven track record. Throughout the last 30 years, LTS has developed more than 20 products which have been successfully commercialized by our pharmaceutical partners.

As a manufacturing and development company of drug delivery systems, LTS is not involved in marketing and distribution of pharmaceutical products.

LTS is open and free to cooperate with its partners based on their requirements. Typical ways of cooperation are:
• Development of transdermal systems or flat film-forming dosage forms for oral application in joint cooperation with pharmaceutical partners. As a result of this cooperation the distribution and marketing rights belong exclusively to the pharmaceutical company, and LTS retains the manufacturing rights.
• Own-funded developments are licensed to other companies retaining the rights of manufacturing.
• Toll manufacturing of patches and oral film forms developed by third parties.

As full service company LTS has the capabilities and facilities to do all facets of product development from feasibility of final production;

LTS is worldwide the only manufacturer of transdermal systems and oral film forms who has FDA-approved production plants with identical equipment on two continents to serve customers. Its state of the art facilities are in GMP compliance and actively producing FDA approved products. The production sites have a capacity of several billion systems per year. Experience from having delivered large commercial quality of patches and oral film forms in the last 30 years makes LTS unique in this field.

LTS has patented various transdermal patch technologies including drug in adhesive matrix systems, multilayered matrix systems as well as different types of reservoir systems (liquid and semi solid reservoir). LTS has prior experience and in-house technical knowledge which allow the utilization of drug incorporation to all types of adhesives including: silicones, PIB's and acrylics.

Moreover, LTS has developed patented technologies for flat film-forming dosage forms for oral drug delivery ranging from flash-release wafer systems to mucoadhesive buccal patch systems.

In addition, LTS offers service for clinical evaluation through a wholly owned CRO, located in Germany.

Out-licensing

Capsaicin, the active ingredient found in red-hot peppers, is used mainly for the relief of chronic pain of rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis More
Currently, LTS has two matrix formulation under development varying in their manufacturing process More
The development of a transdermal therapeutic system offers the advantages of constant plasma levels i.e. avoiding of plasma peaks and providing of therapeutic plasma level during the early morning hours More

R&D

The company's product range includes mainly transdermal pharmaceutical patches but also wafer like oral products. The range of different marketed products is expanding and will include topical medical and cosmetic patches as well as wafer-like products for human and animal use.

LTS does not distribute pharmaceutical products on its own but relies on the market expertise of its cooperation partners. The methods used in, and the facilities and controls used for, the manufacture, processing, packaging and holding of all finished pharmaceuticals produced at LTS are in accordance with Current Good Manufacturing Practice Regulations (cGMPs) and other international regulatory requirements specified e.g. by WHO, EMEA, FDA.

The company's relies generally on historical techniques of medical product manufacturing. Technologies of coating and drying have been applied by experienced scientists and developers into a unique pharmaceutical technology for all forms of application with thin-film-elements. Despite the "natural" separation into transdermal and orally applicable forms, there are overlaps in formulation design and even raw material qualification. The technologies are supported by multiple patent applications in the interest of its industrial clients.

Transdermal Nicotine Delivery was initiated at LTS as pioneering support for university smoking cessation studies in the early 1980´s.
The matrix is manufactured by a printing process on adhesive laminate layers which loads the drug to create a drug-in adhesive matrix. This process provides complete utilization of nicotine without evaporative loss during manufacture. The LTS nicotine patch was introduced by Hefa-Frenon and Ciba-Geigy (now Novartis) in Germany in 1990, in the United States in 1993.

LTS has developed different matrix TTS in cooperation with several international pharmaceutical companies. Key system properties (e.g. physicochemical improvement of drug flux, flexible system geometry, prevention of adhesion of TTS in pouch, ...) have been tailor-made. LTS early followed a concept of mono-layered drug matrices allowing efficient industrial manufacture but in special providing very comfortable wearing properties for the consumer.

LTS offers a wealth of experience in adhesive formulation and coating technology to manufacture and supply specialty laminates intermediates for many applications. The company's products are tailored to its customers' needs and are targeted for use in pharmaceutical, medical, electronic and other specialty markets. LTS offers product development, coating, slitting, pharmaceutical GMP manufacturing conditions and logistic services.

Partnerships

LTS offers collaborative arrangements for assessment and for development of new products based on the most suitable of the LTS' innovative transdermal or oral film technologies. Customized solutions are provided based on the partner's needs and the technical feasibilities.
