Summary
Grupo Uriach was originally founded in 1838. In 1960 the Uriach Research Center was created. In 1981 Grupo Uriach began the marketing of Disgren (triflusal), a novel molecule from the company's own research. By 1990, the company had expanded to cover five continents. Pharmagenus, the company's generic products subsidiary, was founded in 1997. In January 2002, Uriach OTC became a separate company within the Group. In July 2005, the Grupo Uriach through its subsidiary, Uriach OTC has bought Laboratorios Diviser-Aquilea known in the market under the Aquilea brand. In July 2005, The Gruppo Uriach has bought the Divister-Auilea through its subsidiary Uriah OTC.
R&D
The Company traditionally has been investigating in the fields of cardiovascular, inflammatory and infectious diseases. As a result, several products have been launched both in Spain and abroad. This includes: triflusal (Disgren(TM)), the company's best selling drug, marketed in 25 countries, and currently the most prescribed antithrombotic agent in Spain; flutrimazole (Micetal(TM)), a topical antifungal agent with improved tolerability and a broad spectrum of activity, marketed in 15 countries; and fosfosal (Disdolen(TM)), an anti-inflammatory agent with no gastric side effects.
Uriach has four new active substances (NAS) in clinical development. Of these, one is under registration (rupatadine, an antiallergic agent with anti-histamine and anti-PAF activity), one has been recently licensed to an american company (Interneuron Pharmaceuticals) for its clinical development, a third is heading for phase II trials, and a Fourth product is entering phase I. At the same time, a number of line extensions are currently in early clinical stages. Uriach also pursues a number of projects within preclinical research focused in the area of inflammation, of which one is in preclinical stage and three are under lead optimization.
URIACH, BIOHORM and PHARMAGENUS, the three pharmaceutical companies of Grupo Uriach, offer the health professional a wide range of therapeutic treatments namely Circulatory System and Neurology, Dermatology, Central Nervous System, Endocrinology and Metabolism, Antihistamine products as well as Analgesics, Antibiotics and Chemotherapy products.
The OTC Division offers Over The Counter products such as Aerored, Aerored Antiacido, Biodramina, Bioselenium, Dramine, Lipograsil, Nicohepatocyn, Novosal, Opobyl, Revalid, Sedergene and Utabon.
The pharmaceutical businesses of Grupo Uriach comprise Corporación J. Uriach, J. Uriach & Cia, Biohorm, Uriach OTC, Urquima, Dimportex, and Pharmagenus. Uriach, Biohorm, and Pharmagenus are the three pharmaceutical companies of Grupo Uriach. Their products mainly originate from the Group's own research and also by licensing from other well known pharmaceutical companies. Pharmagenus, the company's generic products subsidiary, manufactures and markets generic products in the Spanish market. It deals primarily with hospitals and first aid institutions. External collaborations form the basis of Uriach's R&D strategy. The company has a great interest in the establishment of partnerships and licensing agreements with other companies, in order to jointly develop potential drug candidates at any stage of their development (from Drug Discovery to Phase III clinical trials.)
Partnerships
Grupo Uriach has licensing agreements to market and distribute certain products of GlaxoSmithKline, Menarini, Merck Sharp & Dohme, Recordati, Sanofi-Synthélabo and Vifor. Grupo Uriach also has an out-licensing agreement with Interneuron Pharmaceuticals for the product Dersalazine. Uriach OTC has acquired the brand Suita, a liquid sweetener, from Bristol-Myers Squibb.
