King’s College London is one of the world’s top 25 universities (2010 QS World University Rankings), The Sunday Times 'University of the Year 2010-11' and is in the top seven UK universities for research earnings (£144 million in 2009-10). King’s has a history of excellence in generating and improving new innovative technologies from research for patient benefit and wealth creation. With strengths in the fields of Medicine, Dentistry, Psychiatry and Biomedical & Health Sciences, 60 per cent of King's research was deemed by the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise to be of world-leading or internationally excellent standard.
King’s works closely as an academic partner with three NHS foundation trusts: Guy’s and St Thomas’; King’s College Hospital, and the South London and Maudsley. The College and the NHS trusts already work closely in all three types of National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) research centres, including a Comprehensive Biomedical Research Centre: one of only five such centres in the UK. King’s is the only university to be an academic partner in all three categories of research centre. Our NHS partner Trusts serve around 60 per cent of London’s population (some five million people), giving the academic-clinical partnership unique opportunities to translate ground-breaking research into direct patient benefits for a large and diverse population. This successful partnership has been formally accredited as King’s Health Partners, www.kingshealthpartners.org, one of the UK’s first Academic Health Sciences Centres (AHSCs). King’s also hosts six prestigious Medical Research Council (MRC) Centres, more than any other UK institution.
Combined with this access to the clinical environment, our wealth of multi-disciplinary expertise offers partner companies access to a critical mass of integrated research and key opinion leaders in the development and clinical application of new technologies. Working closely with industry is pivotal to the success of our mission to drive pioneering technologies to market and create healthcare solutions that will improve the lives of patients.
A multi-faculty, research-led university based in the heart of London, King's College London has a strong commitment to supporting the knowledge economy. Through King's Business, www.kcl.ac.uk/business, the College offers a range of excellent research and commercial opportunities for business and the wider community. This activity is a key part of achieving the College’s mission to translate its ideas, research and skills into innovative new products and services that are of real commercial value.
