Computer-Aided Gait Analysis for Neuromuscular Diseases (TID - 44)

University of Nebraska Medical Center / UNeMed Corporation
The Gait-O-Gram can detect and analyze gait information from an individual and, through the use of fuzzy logic algorithms, determine the presence of neuromuscular symptoms.

Full description

Summary

It has been found that a person's gait (step-to-step walking intervals)
is not a random set of movements, but a complex set of fluctuations
that can be characterized to determine levels of neurological
functioning.  Researchers at the University of Nebraska Medical
Center have developed the Gait-O-GramTM, a portable sensor
device and software that can be used to analyze neuromuscular
functions from a persons step. Using the Gait-O-GramTM software,
data can be analyzed to determine a large number of conditions
including, but not limited to: advances in physical therapy, different
levels of Parkinson's disease, peripheral artery disease, and elderly
individuals susceptible to falls.

Market Value

With the ability to detect a variety of diseases, severity of nerve
damage, and identify elderly individuals susceptible to falls, the
Gait-O-GramTM has a wide scope of use for hospitals, private
practices, physical therapy, and nursing homes.  The health benefits
of this machine could be tremendous towards improving quality of
life for many individuals in our population heading towards
retirement and the next phase of their lives.

Features and Benefits

•Early detection of neuromuscular disease
•Improved evaluation of physical therapy
•Patient friendly
•Less expensive than current method
